Assistance Dog Tasks We Can Train

At Connect 4 Dog Training, we can train assistance dogs to perform a wide range of practical tasks designed to help mitigate the impact of physical, medical, neurological, and psychological disabilities. Every training programme is tailored to the individual handler's needs and lifestyle.

Our assistance dog task training can include:

  • Medical detection and alert work
  • Picking up dropped items
  • Opening and closing doors and drawers
  • Assisting with the removal of clothing
  • Loading and unloading the washing machine
  • Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) and light pressure therapy
  • Finding a chair, exit, or designated person
  • Counterbalance, bracing, and guide work*
  • Barking for help in an emergency
  • Pressing an emergency button or pulling a cord to summon assistance
  • Sound alerts, including doorbells, alarms, and phone notifications
  • Retrieving medication, water, and other essential items
  • Panic interruption and behavioural interruption tasks
  • Crowd management tasks, including "block" and "circle" behaviours to create personal space

* Counterbalance, bracing, and guide work are only considered when a dog is fully mature and has passed appropriate health screening, including hip and elbow assessments.

Please note that not every task is suitable for every dog or handler. We will assess each partnership individually to ensure that training is safe, effective, and appropriate for both the dog and handler.
